Even a perfectly restored log home won’t last long without proper sealing and finishing.
Weather, sunlight, and moisture constantly test the wood’s surface—and if the finish fails, damage begins quickly.
At Donnelly Log Homes, we apply professional-grade stains and chinking systems designed to shield your home from the elements while enhancing its natural beauty.
Our application process ensures a clean, uniform finish that protects for years.
We don’t just stain logs—we protect your investment.
Our detailed surface prep, consistent application, and premium products ensure lasting performance and beauty.
✅ Consistent, even finishes

We apply stains and chinking with precision and care to ensure your log home is fully protected and beautifully finished.
“Logs are cleaned and prepped after restoration for a proper bond.”
We carefully prepare the surface to remove dust, debris, and oils so that the stain or sealant adheres perfectly and evenly.
“We use a prelude product to ensure a uniform finish.”
A base coat is applied to balance the wood’s absorption rate, creating an even tone and long-lasting adhesion for the stain.
“After the prelude, the home is stained with a water-based finish.”
Our eco-friendly, water-based stains highlight the natural grain while protecting against UV rays and weathering. Once dry, a clear coat is applied for durability.
“Stain is applied to the point of rejection for full penetration.”
For certain projects, we use premium oil-based stains that soak deeply into the wood, providing a rich tone and superior moisture barrier.
“Backer installed, taped for clean lines, applied at 3/8 depth.”
Each chink joint is carefully taped, applied, and troweled for a clean, uniform finish that expands and contracts naturally with your logs.
Proper prep and careful application make all the difference in how long your finish lasts.
We start by walking the home, checking for damaged areas, failed stain, gaps, and high-risk spots. From there, we build a plan for cleaning, repairs, and the right finish system for your home.
Logs are washed and allowed to dry properly. Cracks, checks, and joints are inspected and repaired as needed so the stain and chinking can bond to a solid, clean surface.
We apply the chosen water-based or oil-based system to the manufacturer’s specs, followed by clear coats and chinking where needed. Every line and coat is applied for even coverage and long-term protection.
Once the work is complete, we walk the home again to ensure everything meets our standard. We’ll also explain simple maintenance steps and when to plan for the next check-up or clear coat.
